Knife Crime Prevention Orders briefing meeting

On Monday 25th March 2019 the APPG co-hosted a meeting, alongside the Standing Committee for Youth Justice and Prison Reform Trust, briefing MPs and Peers on Knife Crime Prevention Orders, ahead of Consideration of Lord’s Amendments to the Offensive Weapons Bill. We heard from experts including the Association of YOT Managers, Magistrates Association, Dr Tim Bateman, and youth justice lawyer Caroline Liggins.

Concerns were raised that there are insufficient safeguards built into the proposed legislation to ensure that the full circumstances of the child or young person are taken into account by the police applying for the orders and the court before an order is imposed. We heard that as well as unnecessarily criminalising vulnerable children, this could lead to inappropriate restrictions being imposed which could place the child at increased risk of neglect or abuse.
